Sheldon makes a statement in Roxbury road race

The 2005 season champ annexed his eighth win of the campaign with a 25:20 trip around a course highlighted by the long trip up High Bridge Road.

Runnerup Joe Mendes, 41, checked in at 28:14.

Andrea Szarkowicz, 15, rallied to score her first victory in the women's division with her 15th-place time of 31:39.

The series will resume tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:30 a.m. with a 5.0-mile race featuring the ascent of Squire Road. Start and finish will be at Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.

There will be no entry fee for the Roxbury Recreation Commission event.

The First National Bank of Litchfield's annual Bill Burley MidSummer championship race will be held July 7 over a 5.0-mile course.

The summertime highlight of the Roxbury road race series is named for Dr. Bill Burley, the program's founding director and a former longime Roxbury resident.

Race entry will be $5 with proceeds benefiting the Roxbury park improvement fund.
