Gunn Memorial Library in Washington is presenting a lecture series exploring literature, politics and culture in the United States through the genre of short stories Mondays at 10 a.m. through Oct. 16 at the Wykeham Road library.

The series will be led by Mark Scarbrough, a scholar on 19th Century American literature.

The discussions will explore Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” Sept. 18, Bret Harte’s “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” Sept. 25, Charles Chestnutt’s “The Wife of His Youth” Oct. 2 and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” Oct. 16.
