A home orcharding seminar for aspiring pomologists will be held soon in the Greater New Milford area.

The program will focus on growing better fruit, not commercially perfect fruit, and is appropriate for residents interested in planting a home orchard to complement vegetable gardens.

Two evening seminars at each of the locations will cover understandable information on Connecticut geology, climatology, soil science, nutrients, planting, selection and an Asian pear tasting.

Peter Montgomery, owner of Montgomery Gardens in Warren, will present the seminar at three Education Connection locations: Oct. 20 in Falls Village, Nov. 12 in Litchfield and Dec. 11 in Danbury.

Montgomery will also discuss his selections for his small, but expanding, half-acre 16-tree orchard, which includes Asian pears, plum, cherries, peaches, nectarine and apricot.

Future seminars will cover the revival of apple cider pressing by homebrewing enthusiasts.
