Scholarship funds accepting applications from students
Following are some of the many scholarship funds currently accepting applications from students in the Greater New Milford area this year.
Washington Citizens Scholarship Foundation scholarships: Deadline: Next Friday. Must be a high school senior who has been a Washington resident for a minimum of two years prior to applying. Applications are available at guidance office of Shepaug Valley High School in Washington.
Shepaug Friends of Music Scholarship: Deadline: Next Friday. Open to Shepaug Valley High School graduating seniors who have plans to pursue higher education and have participated in Shepaug High School's chorus or band program for at least six semesters. Applicants must also have demonstrated commitment and dedication and contributed to the success of the Shepaug High School's music program. Applications are available at Shepaug.
Roger Sherman Chapter, Daughters of Revolutionary War Scholarship: Deadline: May 1. Open to New Milford High School students who have demonstrated an interest in American history and community affairs, and plan to attend a four-year college or university. Applications are available in the guidance office at NMHS or by writing to Roger Sherman Chapter, DAR, P.O. Box 111, New Milford, CT 06776.
Greater New Milford Board of Realtors Scholarships: Deadline: May 2. Open to students in New Milford, Washington, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Sherman, Kent and Warren. Applications available in guidance office of area public and private high schools.
Bridgewater Scholarships: Deadline: May 15. Open to Bridgewater residents who will enter college in September, or who are currently attending college or graduate school. Applications available at Bridgewater's town hall, Shepaug Valley High School, Union Savings Bank and Burnham Library. Applicants must sign up for an interview on the signup sheet at the town hall.
Fairfield County Hounds Scholarship: Deadline: May 15. Open to students who plan to study agriculture or animal husbandry. Application is same as Bridgewater Scholarship application and is available at Shepaug Valley High School.
Art scholarship in memory of Sara Rose Hackett : Deadline: May 23. Sponsored by Sherman Parent/Teacher Organization. Residents of Sherman, who will be graduating from high school and plan to pursue a college degree in the arts, are invited to apply for the scholarship. Applications are available at
Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce Scholarship: Deadline: As soon as possible. Open to area high school seniors. Applicant must have a parent or guardian who works for a business that is a member of the Chamber or must be an employee of a Chamber member. For more information, call (860) 354-6080.
Gladys Cummings Memorial Scholarship: Open to graduating seniors in the New Milford High School Class of 2005 who plan to pursue nursing or teaching careers. Applications are available in the NMHS guidance office.
Donald H. Knowles Memorial Scholarship: Open to graduating seniors in the New Milford High School Class of 2005. Winners each year will be eligible for continuing scholarship grants if they meet certain academic requirements during their college careers. Applications are available in the NMHS guidance office.
Major General Herbert J. Riley Scholarship Fund : Now in its sixth year, the fund is again offering scholarship awards to well-rounded graduating seniors at New Milford High School who have demonstrated high academic achievement as well as leadership and community service. Awards are need-based, and candidates must submit a brief essay (100 words or less) on "What the American Flag Means to Me." Applications are available in the NMHS guidance office.
