Samuel J. Cortese, also known as Pa Sam and Grandpa Sam, 93, died July 16, 2010, at The Gardens in Danbury. He was the widower of Carmella (Racanello) Cortese.

Mr. Cortese was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Stamford, to the late John and Rose (Monte) Cortese. He was the oldest of six children.

Mr. Cortese worked for Atlas Powder and retired after many years as a custodian with the Stamford Board of Education.

After retirement, he enjoyed a security guard position with the Bank of Stamford.

Mr. Cortese attended Stamford public schools and the J.M. Wright Technical School.

He loved working outside around his house and on multiple woodworking projects. He enjoyed many family holiday gatherings.

Mr. Cortese is survived by a son, Gary J. Cortese, and his wife, Michelle, of Weston; a daughter, Rose Marie "Bunny" DeVito, and her husband, Jack, of Danbury; a sister, Antoinette Catino, and her husband, Carmine, of Danbury; seven grandchildren, Gary J. Cortese Jr., and his wife, Valarie, Marianne Burriesci, and her husband, Joseph, and Peter Cortese, of Byron, Ill., John Cortese, and his wife, Susan, of Norwalk, Stephen Cortese, and his wife, Marie-Laure, of Branford, John DeVito III, of Danbury, and Dayna Gartland, and her husband, Brian, of New Milford; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Salvatore Cortese, and two sisters, Louise Conetta, and Victoria Tassitano.

The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory of Stamford was in charge of arrangements.
