The New Milford Lions Club has announced that a sixth grader at Schaghticoke Middle School has won the local 2017 Peace Poster contest.

Keira Sosbe won the local contest, which is sponsored by the Lions Club.

Keira’s poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.

Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

“We will accept differences in people and not avoid them,” the middle schooler said.

The poster was selected by a committee including Lions Herman Izzard, Bob Coppola and Trish Grinnell for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Future of Peace.”

The judging was held in November in New Milford.

New Milford Lions Club President Jim Bannan, agreed with SMS Principal Dr.Christopher Longo that they were impressed by the expression and creativity of students and that it was “obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them.”

“I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions,” Bannan said.

Keira was presented with printed certificates, a Lion tote bag, and a gift certificate for the Village Center for the Arts.
