Ruth McGrath, 88, was a veteran of WWII
Mrs. McGrath was born Sept. 14,1921, in Malone, N.Y., daughter of John B. McKean and Amy (Burton) McKean.
She graduated from local public schools in Malone and Ogdensburg, N.Y., before studying nursing in Buffalo, N.Y., and became a registered nurse.
Mrs. McGrath was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, where she served as an officer at Fort Dix, N.J., from 1945 through 1947.
She married Kingsley L. McGrath, Jan. 12,1948, in Naples, N.Y.
Mrs. McGrath was wife, mother of four, and a homemaker for more than 50 years in Watertown, N.Y., where she was a longtime member of Emmanuel Congregational Church, UCC, and was active in the senior choir, Circle 4 and Gammas. She marched every year in the CROP Walk and the AIDS Walk-A-Thon until recently.
She is survived by a son, the Rev. Robert J. McGrath, of New Milford, and his partner, Bill Witcher; a daughter, Jeanne L. Walczak of Friendship, Wis., and her husband, Mike Walczak; a son, David J. McGrath of Alexandria, Va., and his partner, John Johnson; a daughter, Ellen L. Jeffers, of Crossville, Tenn. and her husband, Art Jeffers; and two grandsons, Matt Carpenter of Orlando, Fla., and Ben Carpenter of Philadelphia, Pa.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kingsley McGrath in 1990, and a grandson, Lee Walczak, in 2004.
Memorial services will be held Oct. 17, 2010, at South Congregational Church, UCC, 160 Piedmont St. in Waterbury, and First Congregational Church, UCC, 36 Main St. in New Milford, and Oct. 19, 2010, at Emmanuel Congregational Church, UCC, 119 S. Hamilton St. in Watertown, N.Y.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements.
