Roses & Thorns
ROSES to Mike Sciortino and many other civic and community members for helping out when they read about fire destroying the handicapped-accessible van used to transport a New Milford High School senior. Mr. Sciortino, a Trumbull resident, generously donated a similar van he owned to 17-year-old Sean Quigg and his family, and others have offered their help and support. It is heartening to see yet another unselfish response in times of need.
THORNS to zebra mussels, the invasive species threatening aquatic life and the environment of Candlewood Lake and Lakes Lillinonah and Zoar. Though tiny -- the size of a thumbnail -- zebra mussels can wreak much damage. We urge boaters to be vigilant about cleaning their boats and equipment so as to prevent the spread of these invaders.
ROSES to members of the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department for organizing yet another successful Pickin' and Fiddlin' competition this month. The 37th annual event drew several thousand people to Roxbury and provided the opportunity to hear rousing music outdoors. It is a fine way to raise money to support the volunteer firefighters.
