Richard H. Shanks, 72, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Washington, died Oct. 25 at St. Petersburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Lucille (Beatty) Shanks.

Mr. Shanks was born June 4, 1923, in New Milford, son of the late Harry and Mary (Seymour) Shanks.

He was a longtime resident of Washington Depot. He was employed for 18 years at the Washington Supply Co mpany and for 18 years with the Shepaug Valley school system, retiring from Burnham School in Bridgewater in 1999.

Mr. Shanks spent his winters in Florida and summers in Copake, N.Y. He loved camping, playing pool and his family.


Besides his wife, Mr. Shanks is survived by three sons, Gary of Paradise, Pa., Ronald of Washington Depot and Mark of Bantam; six daughters, Katherine Gueniat
of New Preston, Sharon Centrella and Connie Marrapodi of Columbia, Tenn., Cindy Palmer of Litchfield, Laurie Hull of Washington Depot and Nancy Darrin of Waldorf, Md.; a sister, Lillian Thompson of New Milford; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at noon at Lillis Funeral Home , 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Friends and family are invited to the Washington firehouse in Washington Depot following the service.
