Relates church's decision to help Loaves & Fishes
To the Editor:
The Roxbury Congregational Church recently held a beef barbecue, which raised nearly $3,000 for Loaves & Fishes Hospitality House in New Milford.
The event almost did not take place as high beef prices were causing some in the church to rethink whether the community would support such an effort.
After publicity of the cancellation of this popular end of summer event, we had an offer of purchasing the beef at a substantially reduced price.
This generous offer caused the congregation and its barbecue planners to want to pass on this generosity to others.
So, we designated all the profits to Loaves & Fishes.
Loaves serves a meal each day to the working poor and homeless who are in New Milford.
It is currently located in the Richmond Citizen Center along Main Street and a new location is hoped for in the near future.
For our congregation, which seeks to share God's love, it was a natural thing to do and we had such a good time doing it.
The Roxbury Congregational Church is located in Roxbury and is a member congregation of the United Church of Christ.
