Nominations for two annual awards honoring the late Major Stephen Reich are being sought from the Washington and Region 12 community.
The awards are presented annually to a Shepaug Valley High School student and to a citizen of Washington who demonstrate character, service, leadership and achievement.
Major Reich grew up in Washington, graduated from Shepaug in 1989 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1993.
He was commanding a rescue operation in eastern Afghanistan when his Chinook helicopter was shot down June 28, 2005, killing all 16 aboard.
This year's award to a Shepaug student will be presented at a May 27 school-wide assembly starting at 9:30 a.m. and open to the public.
Nominations from the public are encouraged and should be sent by April 27 to Scott Werkhoven at firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to Shepaug Valley High School to his attention.
Nomination should include a brief description of students' qualifications for the award, connection to the students, and contact information.
Major Stephen Reich Award for Exceptional
"The award recognizes a Washington citizen who stands out among the many people who give so much, in so many ways, to our community," said Mr. Werkhoven.
As in past years, the committee will present the award on Memorial Day during the ceremony in front of Bryan Memorial Town Hall following the parade.
To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Major Stephen Reich Award for Exceptional Citizenship, a new Web site has been launched at http://www.majorreichaward.com. Details about the award can be found, as well as biographies of past winners and an on-line nomination form.
Nominations from the community need to be in writing and should chronicle the nominee's contributions in as much detail as possible. They will be considered by the criteria of character, service, leadership, and achievement.
Nominations may be submitted through April 27 in three ways: 1) visit the Web site and click on "Submit a Nomination;" 2) by mail to Sheila Anson, Town Clerk, Town of Washington, PO Box 383, Washington Depot, CT 06794; or 3) hand deliver to Sheila Anson's office on the main level of the Bryan Memorial Town Hall.
