Recycling center at a glance

Location: 18 Young's Field Road, New Milford (next to the former ambulance barn).

Hours: The center is open to New Milford, Sherman and Brookfield residents only. It is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single stream recyclables accepted free of charge: plastics with the numbers 1-7; glass bottles, jars and lids; milk, juice, cereal and egg cartons; steel, tin and aluminum cans; paper, hardbound and phone books; shredded and office paper, newspaper, folders and cards; magazines, inserts and junk mail; metal and plastic hangars; and aluminum foil.

E-waste accepted free of charge: TVs, computers, fax machines, cell phones, digital cameras, VCRs, video games, monitors, tape recorders, radios keyboards and other items.

Other items accepted for a charge: refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, hot water heaters, garbage compactors, range hoods/fans, microwaves, wood stoves, water coolers and furnace/boilers, furniture, cast iron tubs, doors, toilet bowls and tanks, engine blocks, sinks, metal water tanks, wood, tile, flooring, sheet rock, insulation, ceiling tiles, bricks, pallets, concrete, masonry products, carpet, construction debris or bulky waste, riding mowers, tires, tractor tires, vehicle batteries, motor oil, boxes of books/dishes and rugs.

Garbage: New Milford residents may drop off a bag up to 15 gallons for $1.50, from 15 to 39 gallons for $3 and 40 gallons or more for $5. Sherman residents may drop off a bag up to 15 gallons for $2, from 15 to 39 gallons for $3.50 and 40 gallons or more for $5.50.

Clothing free table: Clothing items may be left on the clothing free tables and will be donated to the Salvation Army at the end of the day.

Other items for free table: At the discretion of center personnel, other items may be left on the free table. There may be a minimal charge.

Use of center and fees: A new sticker is required annually at July 1. The sticker fee is $20 for residents, $40 for small businesses of up to 10 people and free for people 65 and older, with additional fees for garbage and disposal of bulky waste, appliances and other items. A one-day pass may be bought for $3 allowing unlimited trips for that day only. Brookfield and Sherman residents must obtain their own stickers from the town hall in their town of residence.

Payment system: Cash is not accepted at the center. Personal checks, money orders and punch cards are accepted. Punch cards may be purchased at the New Milford Public Library on Main Street, the Town Clerk's Office in the town hall on Main Street, or at the Public Works Department on Young's Field Road. Punch cards may be purchased for up to $32.
