Program to help caregivers

The New Milford Senior Center's Powerful Tools for Caregivers, an educational program designed to help family caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend, is up and running.

The program began Thursday, and will meet Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. through May 28 at the center, 40 Main St.

The series is based on the highly successful chronic disease self-management program known as Live Well and was developed over three years of testing and research to assess its effectiveness.

Since the program's inception in 1998, program materials have reached over 70,000 caregivers nationwide.

Participants will develop self-care strategies to help them reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate their feelings, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming will help participants identify the "tools" needed for successful caregiving and put them into action in daily life. Participants will receive a copy of "The Caregiver Helpbook," developed for the class.
