To the Editor:

I have been associated with the Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce's Village Fair Days for 19 years.

Every year, I am amazed at the support that the people, nonprofit organizations, the town government and businesses show for this event.

I have had the honor of being the chairman for the past four years, which really is an easy task, given the great team of volunteers who donate their time, and especially the work of Denise Del Mastro, the executive director of the chamber.

We start planning the fair in September, and clean up the Village Green after the closing song by Curtis T.

Village Fair Days is a fundraiser for the Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce.

The monies we raise help us to host community events such as the fireworks celebration, Harvest Festival, our annual chamber breakfast, the Festival of Lights/tree lighting ceremony and the hands-on train display.

Through the years, our funds have also benefitted local charities and organizations such as the John Pettibone Scholarship Fund, New Milford Ambulance, New Milford Hospital, the United Way of Western Connecticut, Water Witch Hose Company No. 2, American Red Cross, Alzheimer's Association, Special Olympics, Paint the People, Run Santa Run, the Wheels program, Remembering Our Veterans, New Milford Youth Baseball/Softball and the creative playground next to John Pettibone School.

This year, we had beautiful weather, large crowds and great entertainment -- a perfect storm of good things.

A special event this year was the unveiling of the new clock tower at the former Slone Pharmacy building, a beautiful addition to the Village Center. A big thank you goes to Gary Goldring and his people, who have done so much to aid the re-vitalization efforts.

I would also like to offer my congratulations to Patrick and Mary Maguire, the King and Queen of the fair. They have done, and continue to do, so much for our community.

Congratulations also to our scholarship recipients, Thomas Barkal, Keleigh Principi and Alison Rettenmeier.

They are very deserving and we wish them the best in the future.

I would like to thank All American Waste for providing the waste removal services for the fair and many other community events, Clayton's Mercantile Supply and The Home Depot for supplies used during the fair, the Public Works Department for bringing and removing all the barricades we use and the sweeping of the green prior to the fair, the Parks & Recreation Department for supplying the cones for the Kids' Fun Run, Chief Shawn Boyne and the New Milford Police Department for security, Fire Marshal Karen Facey and Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Ohmen for the inspection of our tents every year (and the use of the parking space for our garbage truck) and Mayor Pat Murphy and her staff for the support they have given us over the years.

In closing, I would personally like to thank some folks who I have had the pleasure of working with on this event over the years.

For their contributions to our community, thanks to my co-chairman, Darren Piper, former co-chairman (and our photographer) Laura Lewis, Herman Izzard (who has been with us 18 years), former chairmen Bill and Fran Babbino, and Denise Del Mastro.
