Police officer comes to student's rescue
While on patrol that day in the school cafeteria, Smith noticed a student was in distress, coughing with his face turning red and eyes watering.
With quick action, Smith delivered a back blow to the boy, dislodging an object that had lodged in the boy's throat.
"Your actions allowed the student to receive the emergency treatment that was needed, which probably saved his life," Deputy Chief Mark Buckley wrote in Smith's letter of commendation.
"You were in the right place at the right time," Buckley continued.
"What could have been a resulting tragedy was averted without injury or loss of life through your exemplary utilization of professional police conduct."
In a handwritten note on the commendation letter, Chief Shawn Boyne wrote "Nick, Great Job!"
