MERIDEN — A man was taken into custody on Monday after he allegedly chased after people on Grove Street while armed with a gun, according to police.

Officers in the area responded after a call came in about a man chasing after people with a gun. Units arrived in time to witness some of the incident, police said.

The man, later identified as 25-year-old Johnny Irizarry, fled on foot as officers approached, police said. He tried to hide behind a parked car, but was spotted by officers and complied with orders to surrender to police.

Police said Irizarry was in possession of narcotics and the gun was found under the vehicle he tried to hide behind.

At police headquarter, Irizarry was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics and interfering with police. He was held on a $500,000 bond.
