The Northwest Connecticut Arts Council has announced New Milford will play host to two arts and cultural events in June -- Paint the People and the Open Your Eyes tour.

Both events are possible in part through funding from the New Milford Commission on the Arts.

The Village Center for the Arts in New Milford will host the second annual Paint the People event June 8 at Young's Field on Young's Field Road.

The all-day, family-friendly interactive event will feature community artists of many disciplines (plein air painters, glassblowers, cartoonists, stone carvers and others), opportunities for attendees to create as while fine-artists do, a gala art exhibit of works by students in the area, an artist village, music, dance troupes and specialty food vendors.

Patrons who buy a wristband can participate in a variety of activities, including paint catapults, mural walls, paint wars, T-shirt tie-dye, face and body painting, group cartoon draw-alongs, extreme spin art and a paint-by-number car.

The VCA is a nonprofit community fine art center that creates and hosts events to raise awareness of and increase the visibility of the arts in New Milford and beyond.

"The goal of the festival is to provide a venue for the community to gather in the name of art, lowering barriers between people of all backgrounds and ages," said Sharon Kaufman, executive director of the VCA.

Additionally, the event helps "build capital for scholarships and future programming," Kaufman said.

Kaufman said "we're excited to have the arts council involved in Paint the People and vice versa to be involved with their studio tour."

"We're sharing resources and ideas, cross-promoting. It's going to be a great month," she said.

Admission is $5 per person, with a $20 cap for families of five or more. Children under 2 will be admitted for free.

Tickets will be available to the children of those receiving Social Services' assistance.

Admission is all interactive activities will be available by purchasing a $10 wristband.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the VCA, 12 Main St.

Volunteer opportunities are available to those ages 12 and older.
