Updated 9:34 pm, Wednesday, May 2, 2012
The John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford will hold its next Second Saturday Stars program May 12.
The program, to be offered from 8 to 10 p.m. at the observatory behind New Milford High School on Route 7 South, will focus on the "Great Venus Transit of 2012."
A very rare event, the
Venus Transit will occur June 5 beginning about 6:03 p.m. At this time, Earth's sister planet will be seen crossing the disk of the sun from this part of the country.
This will only be the seventh time the phenomenon will be observed by humans. The next transit will be in 105½ years.
The upcoming program will describe why the event is so rare, the scientific importance of Venus transits, and explore the history of expeditions to observe these events.
The circumstances of the 2012 transit will be presented and safe methods to observe the event will be given.
