The John J. McCarthy Observatory in New Milford will hold its next “Second Saturday Stars” program, “Insight: NASA’s Next Mission to Mars,” Dec. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.

On Nov 26, NASA's InSight spacecraft landed on the plains of Mars. Tasked with taking the vitals of Mars, this mission is dedicated to studying the deep interior of the planet.

InSight's main scientific instruments include a seismometer to measure Mars' quakes and vibrations and a heat-flow probe to burrow 16 feet into the surface to measure deep internal temperatures.

By studying the structure of Mars, InSight will help us learn how rocky worlds form, including our Earth and other exo-planets.

This month’s program will showcase NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California with NASA InSight Engineer and New Milford resident Kyle Cloutier.

The observatory is located behind New Milford High School on Route 7 South.
