The John J. McCarthy Observatory will hold its next “Second Saturday Stars” program Jan. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The topic at the observatory located behind New Milford High School on Route 7 South will be “Farewell to Saturn and the Cassini Spacecraft.”

The program had been scheduled for December but was postponed to January due to weather.

After nearly 13 years in orbit, the Cassini Mission to Saturn came to an awe-inspiring end.

In April, the Cassini spacecraft was placed on an impact course that unfolded over five months of daring dives between the planet and its rings.

This final phase of the mission returned unparalleled science from observations closer than ever before of Saturn and the ring plane.

At this program, spacecraft operator Kyle Cloutier, from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will revisit the final chapter of this extraordinary mission of exploration and discovery.
