KEENE, N.H. - The Newtown 12-year-old travel baseball team advanced to the Cal Ripken World Series with a thrilling 11-10 victory over Rhode Island in the New England regional championship game Thursday night.

Newtown will play in the World Series in Aberdeen, Md., starting Aug. 11.

Newtown rallied from a 6-0 second-inning deficit to with the New England regional championship. Newtown drew within 6-5 in the third inning as Sean Ross laced a double that sparked a five-run rally.


Rhode Island went up 10-5 in the fourth, but Newtown took the lead for good in the fifth inning on Oliver Powers' grand slam.


Powers, Austin Bonadio , Curtis Droniak and Ryan Tita combined on a strong pitching performance. Tita pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning to preserve the win.


Newtown went undefeated in the tournament, winning its four games by a combined score of 46-13.
