REDDING — The New Milford softball team was down to its final three outs in its SWC quarterfinal Monday against Joel Barlow, but didn’t panic one bit.

Three runs later and after holding off a Barlow rally, the No. 6 Green Wave booked a first-round upset by knocking off the No. 3 Falcons 5-4 in a wild playoff matchup. New Milford will face No. 2 ND-Fairfield in Tuesday’s semifinals at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

No. 4 Newtown will meet No. 1 Masuk in the other semifinal. Masuk beat Pomperaug 13-3 while the Nighthawks beat Brookfield 5-3.

Sarah Mickelson went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs for the Green Wave, while Kallie Johhnson, Olivia Casa and Paige Duffany all had two hits.

Barlow — which beat New Milford 9-0 during the regular season — was without pitcher Claire McCann, who could only hit Monday. Abby Ota went 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Ava Slavinsky went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The teams combined to leave 21 runners on base.
