NEW MILFORD — Mayor David Gronbach recognized five town residents last Friday for recently becoming naturalized U.S. citizens.

Galcia Sedeno, Mayat Tun, Eloisa Tello-Barlow, Maria Elena Kant and her husband, Jose Paredes, each received a certificate from the mayor during a ceremony at Town Hall.

Galcia Sedeno, 34, moved to New Milford from Mexico five years ago after marrying her husband who’s from the area. She recently received a cosmetology license.

“The class was very comfortable, very easy,” Sedeno said. “When I went to be naturalized, I was very nervous because my English is poor. But it was all right. The interviewer was very nice.”

Mayat Tun moved to the U.S. from Myamar. She and her husband manage the sushi area at Big Y Supermarket in New Milford. The couple has two young sons.

Maria Elena Kant and her husband, Jose Paredes, came to the U.S. from Peru, while Tello-Barlow also came to America from Peru.

All five studied with Ann Vallambroso, who taught the citizenship preparation class at Literacy Volunteers on the Green in New Milford.
