New Milford man pleads guilty to assault charges

A New Milford man agreed to a plea deal Tuesday at Litchfield Superior Court in connection with him allegedly initiating sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl and beating his wife.

James Quarford, 47, of Bridge Road, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault and third-degree assault. He will be sentenced at a hearing July 9.

New Milford police launched an investigation in June 2009, they said, after Diane Quarford was beaten and treated for injuries at New Milford Hospital.

According to police, a child was questioned and told police she had been molested by Mr. Quarford.

Mr. Quarford must register as a sex offender for 10 years under the terms of the plea agreement, according to his public defender, Christopher Cosgrove.

He is being held in custody on $77,500 bond.
