Nelson was born in Danbury, March 23, 1941, son of the late Franklin and Josephine (Alves) Neves. He graduated from Henry Abbott Technical School and attended the criminal justice program at Western Connecticut State University . He served with the Danbury Police Department for 30 years, retiring in 1997, with the rank of detective sergeant. After retirement, he had worked as an investigator for the Superior Court in Danbury and as an interpreter of Portuguese and Spanish in the Danbury school system. He was the first director of the Danbury Police Activities League and was instrumental in the development of the new PAL building and had served as the vice-president of the National PAL . He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police , the Police Benevolent Association , the Elks Club , Beckerle Hose Company , and had been a board member of the former Danbury Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union . Nelson was always known as a loving family man and had a love for the beach and travel. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two sons: Philip N. Neves and wife Judith , of Austin, Texas; and Mark A. Neves and wife Karen , of Danbury; four grandchildren: Nicole, Ashley , Renee and Ryan Neves , a sister, Alice Bocaccio , of Danbury; a brother, Franklin Neves , of New Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother, Manuel Neves and sister, Maria Caetano . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Entombment will take place in St. Peter Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon.
