The New Milford High School marching band and color guard will host its annual USBands home competition Sept. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event will take place on the main athletic field at New Milford High School along Route 7 South, and feature performances from the school's award-winning marching band and color guard, as well as bands from Bethel, Danbury, Brien McMahon, Bunnell, Stamford and Cheshire high schools.

Judged performances will include a variety of musical pieces set to intricate movements, augmented by color guards that interpret the music through dance, often using flags, sabers, and rifles.

The event will kick off with a rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner," sung by NMHS students Jaclyn Mercer and Rebecca Myhill.

NMHS' marching band and color guard will close the show with an exhibition performance, "The Planets," with music by Gustav Holst, including Mars, Venus and Jupiter.

The 120-member unit -- representing one of the largest organizations at the high school-- will then resume its busy 2012 competition and concert schedule.

Refreshments, including chicken or beef wraps, salads, hot dogs, apple crisp and assorted baked goods will be available for purchase.

Admission will be $10 for adults, $5 for children, seniors and students in kindergarten through grade 12.
