The New Milford High School art and music departments have been keeping a full calendar with their activities.

Emerging artist

Junior Zoe Miolla has been named the first emerging artist of this school year.

Her artwork is featured this month in the school's art showcase.

Zoe has been recognized for her outstanding effort in many art classes, as she works toward a cohesive body of work for the senior art show.

Music notes

The New Milford High School marching band and color guard hosted a home competition Sept. 28. For photographs, visit www.newmilfordspectrum.com.

All-school musical

Faculty director Bob Keck has announced the all-school musical, scheduled in March, will be Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical hit, "Cats."

Learn, then teach

Paula Marian and Annette Marcus of the NMHS art department recently participated in a self-portrait ceramic tile workshop through the Connecticut Clay Artists.

Leather hard tiles were incised with a self-portrait and then decorated with underglazes in the style of Andy Warhol.

The technique may be introduced to ceramics classes.

Marcus also participated in a Turkish paper marbling workshop at the Village Center for the Arts in New Milford.

The workshop featured techniques dating back as far as the 16th century.

Marcus produced several marbled pieces, which may be introduced to her crafts class.

In August, Marian and Marcus took part in a show at the Jewish Community Center in Sherman.

Community

involvement

Since June, the art department has been working on 40 centerpieces for the MVP-SOS dinner scheduled for Oct. 26.

Marian and Marcus have thrown bowls, which will be glazed by independent ceramics students Steven Weber and Olivia Hannah.

Carol Kelley's design foundation students will arrange the flowers, with teapot and garden insect ornaments made by crafts, ceramics 2 and Kristi Soucie's sculpture classes.
