WASHINGTON — An incident involving a motorcycle and a bear left two people injured and closed Route 199 near Washington on Saturday, officials said.

State Police said the incident happened around noon near Roxbury Road in Washington. The crash closed Route 199 temporarily.

Litchfield County Dispatch confirmed a caller reported the bear, but did not say whether the motorcycle and bear collided. State Police later clarified that the motorcyclist swerved to avoid the bear.

Police said that the driver of the motorcycle had minor injuries and declined medical service. The passenger suffered “moderate” injuries.

Officials requested a Lifestar helicopter, the dispatch center said. The condition of the passenger is unknown at this time.

The Washington Fire Department and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also responded to the scene. DEEP reported that the bear was no longer near the scene when they arrived.

This is a developing story. Check back soon for updates.
