Artists to demonstrate watercolor painting
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown, will hold a watercolor painting demonstration by Lori Woodward Simons, an artist from Merrimack, N.H., July 25 at 1:30 p.m.
The demonstration, in the Newtown Meeting House on Main Street at the flagpole, is open to the public.
Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.
Arts council offers trio of classes
Pottery, painting, and basket weaving classes are scheduled at Tilly Foster Farm beginning Aug. 2.

New students must be registered by Aug. 31
School officials remind parents that new students must be registered before school opens Aug. 31.
New students entering kindergarten through third grade at Hill and Plain School on Old Town Park Road, Northville Elementary School on Hipp Road, or John Pettibone School on Pickett District Road, or will enter fourth through sixth grade at Sarah Noble Intermediate School on Sunny Valley Road may register Aug. 8.
Parents and/or guardians are asked to call the appropriate school after Aug. 2 but before Aug. 7 to set up a time to register.
Parents of students who will enter seventh or eighth grade should make an appointment to register at Schaghticoke Middle School on Hipp Road by calling (860) 354-2204 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
New students at New Milford High School should call the NMHS guidance department secretary at (860) 350-6647, ext. 1102, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment to register.
Proof of residency and health records must be shown at time of registration. If possible, students should bring academic records from their previous schools.

Orchestra taking contest applications
The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra is now accepting applications for its eighth annual music competition on Oct. 13.
Competition is open to music students in grades 6 to 12. All student winners will receive cash prizes and be featured in a winners performance Nov. 17.
Students must submit an application, along with an audiotape or CD, for the preliminary selection process. Application forms can be downloaded from the Web site www.ridgefieldsymphony.org.
Applications must be received by Aug. 31.
Successful applicants will be invited to live auditions Oct. 13, where each will play 10 minuets of the audition composition.
