An opportunity for an interested resident to be appointed to the area Mental Health Catchment Area Council No. 21 is now available by contacting the New Milford mayor's office.

The CAC is the local part of the Regional Mental Health Board (RMHB).

The local council represents New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Sherman, Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Newtown, New Fairfield, Redding and Ridgefield.

The CACs are statutorily mandated volunteer citizen advisory groups that advise the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), assess the needs for and plan for new services and programs and conduct evaluations of the existing local mental health services.

They channel information about mental health and addiction needs up to the Regional Board and DMHAS and likewise channel information back to the community.

Town representatives, who cannot be providers of mental health services, should be able to attend most of the monthly meetings, which are held the fourth Thursday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m. in Bethel.

The next meeting will be Sept. 23.
