May Spada Bowl to honor Timmy Spada
The Timmy Spada Memorial Foundation has announced the Spada Bowl touch football tournament will be held May 5 in New Milford.
The event, which had been scheduled for October but was postponed to May, will be held at Harrybrooke Park off Still River Drive.
It is being held in the honor of Tim Spada, who was the New Milford varsity quarterback from 2001-04, who took his own life two years ago.
Timmy’s birthday is May 4.
Spada Bowl proceeds will be donated to two beneficiaries, the John Pettibone Memorial Scholarship Fund and the event's host, Harrybrooke Park.
A scholarship will be established in Spada's name which will be gifted to a New Milford High School student in need of funding to pursue higher education.
“This event means a lot,” said Myke Furhman, Timmy Spada Memorial Foundation president.
“In high school, having your good friend play quarterback is something special and it helped to create so many amazing memories,” he said. “This is a wonderful way for us to keep his legacy alive — by hosting a tournament in his honor and in establishing a scholarship that will help an aspiring hometown student.”
Registration is available on the foundation’s website, at www.timmyspada.org.
Entry is $400 per team, which may have up to 20 players on the roster.
Football games will be six on six, and each team is guaranteed multiple games.
Players who wish to enter as free agents may do so on the website for a small deposit, which will be refunded when they are placed on an active roster
The event is also seeking sponsors at all levels, with premium sponsorship packages available.
Food and beverages will be available on site.
Spectators are welcome at no charge.
“Harrybrooke is excited and honored to host such a meaningful event,” said Billy Buckbee, the park’s executive director. “We're hoping for a beautiful spring afternoon when it's just starting to get warm outside. It will be a great day.”
Buckbee, New Milford's state representative, also sits on the Timmy Spada Memorial Foundation board of directors.
The foundation was established with the purpose of raising funds that will be donated to charities in Spada's honor.
This is the first fundraiser of the year held by the foundation, with the Third Annual Timmy Spada Memorial Golf Classic being held in early summer at the Club at River Oaks in Sherman, Connecticut.
