The town of New Milford has announced the recipients of the 2017 Leonardo da Vinci Award.

The award, created by the late Peter “Flag Man” Orenski, a New Milford businessman and internationally renowned vexillologist, in 2001, is presented to an individual who exemplifies the ideals of community service and arts.

This year’s recipients are Lisa M. Martin and Jeremy Haase Ruman.

Martin has volunteered for Loaves & Fishes Hospitality House, the local soup kitchen, two to three times a week since 2006 and stepped up to a leadership role in 2007.

Her roles have included secretary/treasurer, president from 2012-16, and she has presided over all fundraising, purchase of new property, zoning approval and more, and is chief operating officer.

Ruman has been involved in the Merwinsville Hotel Restoration most of her adult life.

She has served on the board of directors since 2000 and as president since 2012.

Ruman’s father, George Haase, began working on the restoration of the Merwinsville Hotel in 1971 and instilled in his daughter a love for the 19th century hotel that continues to this day.

The recipients were honored on June 10 at a ceremony at the New Milford Historical Society & Museum.
