Art department holds children's exhibit

The art department at Danbury Public Schools holds its annual Marjorie Shepard Children's Art Show starting today.

The opening reception will be in the Danbury High School arts wing from 6 to 9 p.m.

The exhibit features hundreds of works of art from Danbury public schools and includes drawings and paintings, crafts, sculptures and ceramics, photography and film, computer animation and graphics.

Refreshments will be provided by the Danbury High National Art Honor Society.

Students from the high school's music department will perform.

The exhibit continues at Danbury High School until Friday from 2:15 p.m. until about 5 p.m.

The work of students in New Milford High School's ceramics II classes are on display at The Silo through June 2. The students in Art Department Chairwoman Paula Marian's classes have submitted 50 commemorative plates. The show, exhibited in the gallery and cooking school, is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Author to speak at cancer survivors day

An Arizona psychologist and author who is a cancer survivor will be the featured guest speaker at the 10th annual National Cancer Survivors Day June 3 at the Ethan Allen Hotel on Lake Avenue Extension.

Dr. Dan Shapiro, an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine who wrote the book "Mom's Marijuana'' and a one-act play "A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Chemotherapy,'' will offer a comedic personal tale. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; the event is from 9 to 11 a.m.

The annual event is sponsored by the Community Cancer Collaborative, a team of organizations such as the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital; Ann's Place, The Home of I CAN; and the American Cancer Society.
