To the Editor:

A lot of concern has been raised whether Region 12 will be able to attract enough tuition-paying students to the AgSTEM program to make it work.

As a member of the Nonnewaug ag advisory committee, I was recently given a recruiting update by the chairman of the Agriscience department.

The guidance departments of the 23 towns that are covered by Nonnewaug are reporting an expected 264 applications to be turned in by the Dec. 4 deadline.

This is far more than the 112 that were anticipated.

The three towns in Region 12 are expected to produce 15 applicants to Nonnewaug for the 2016-17 school year.

If we add up the anticipated applications from the other seven towns that would be sending their pupils to the Shepaug AgSTEM program, we can add 117 out-of-district (tuition paying) students.

This is 117 students from towns that were expected to produce 37.
