Kent library cites essay winners
Kent Memorial Library has announced the winners of the New Soldiers essay contest, which was held in conjunction with the library's spring lecture series of the same name.
The third annual contest was open to Housatonic Valley Regional High School students. Cash prizes were awarded to the top two students.
The winner of the $100 prize for students in grades 9-10 is Monica Chin, of Lakeville, who wrote about the influence her grandfather's military career during World War II has had on her.
The winner of the $500 prize for students in grades 11-12 is Denali Blumert, of Salisbury, who wrote about military poet Wilfred Owen. Asked to submit an essay of 500 words, each applicant reflected upon the military figure whose service has been most inspirational to him or her.
