Just In Antiques settles in vintage home
Antiquing is in Justin Krul's blood.
The 26-year-old grew up in a family business of antique sales in mall spaces from Southbury to New York City.
Krul has now set out on his own.
He has opened Just In Antiques & More at 487 Danbury Road (Route 7) in New Milford, for three-quarters of a century known to generations of New Milford residents as home to the prominent Stone family.
Living upstairs in a circa 1934 home at the intersection with Cross Road, Krul has turned the downstairs into designated rooms of kitchenware and ketch, fishing and hunting gear, smoking pipes and old glass bottles, and more.
"I love saying, `This is the Bear Room, with the bear seen on the Discovery Science Channel show `Oddities,' " said Krul, whose taxidermy offerings were featured on the show in June 2012.
"I'm not a hunter, myself. But these animals are treasures," he added, as he stood next to a mounted brown bear in the sports paraphernalia room.
Before opening the shop in late March, Krul sold antique fishing gear and other items through his Facebook page and in antique mall spaces.
A recent University of Scranton (Pa.) graduate, he was ready for a permanent location.
"Having grown up in New Fairfield, I spent time at my grandfather's house here on Lake Candlewood," Krul said. "It's great to be in this building that speaks of the town's past."
Brookfield mom Tammy Sylvester sings Krul's praises.
"My son, Brayden, was doing an Evolution of Technology project for the Huckleberry School science fair," Sylvester said.
"I'd been in the shop before so called Justin," she said. "He said to come in and we looked around. He took a wheel off an old bike for us and had a toy Model T car. They were perfect."
A New Milford High School Class of 1912-13 group photo hangs on one wall in the shop. Pottery and glassware harkening from New Milford's industrial past are on display.
Prices are kept low to moderate to keep stock moving. Visitors are asked to sign the registry -- a large Montville land records ledger circa 1895.
"I have a lot of help from my family," Krul said.
"When I go to buy at estate sales and such, my dad or mom -- Jim and Ginny Krul -- will go with me."
Just In Antiques & More, at 487 Danbury Road in New Milford, is open Fridays from noon to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The grand opening weekend will be Friday through Sunday, May 3 to 5.
