John R. Gilbert, 90, of Knollcrest, New Fairfield, died Feb. 28 at his home. He was the husband of Genevieve (Gould) Gilbert.

He was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Danbury, the only child of Percy and Magdalene (Fuchs) Gilbert.

Mr. Gilbert graduated from Danbury High School's Class of 1940 and from Quinnipiac College with an asspciate's degree in 1942.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Gilbert served in the China Burma India Theater as a medic in the 58th portable surgical hospital for Gen. Stillwell's Army, earning the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge.

A master carpenter, he lived in the home he built in New Fairfield for 55 years. He also built many houses in the Danbury area throughout his lifetime.

He was a charter member and oldest surviving member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, which he helped build.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Mr. Gilbert is survived by four children, James, of N. Pownal, Vt.; John Jr., and his wife, Susan, of New Fairfield; Genevieve Harrison, and her husband, Ronald, of Sherman; and Madeline Villani, and her husband, Robert, of Danbury; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery in New Fairfield,
