Jerome E. "Jerry" Hyland, 77, of New Milford, died Oct. 9 at New Milford Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Kathleen Dineen Hyland.

Mr. Hyland was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Waterbury, son of the late James E. and Helen Kiely Hyland.

A lifelong resident of New Milford, he graduated from St. Francis Xavier School, New Milford High School in 1953 and Fordham University in 1957.

Mr. Hyland received graduate degrees from Western Connecticut State University and the University of Bridgeport.

He was a mathematics teacher in the Danbury school system for 35 years, retiring in 1993.

Mr. Hyland was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Housatonic Council No. 40.

He was a volunteer member of the Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 fire department, of New Milford, a member of the board of trustees of the New Milford Historical Society, a member and former treasurer of the New Milford Democratic Town Committee and a member of the Connecticut Association of Retired Teachers. He was also a former member of the New Milford Zoning Board of Appeals.

Mr. Hyland was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and attended New Milford High School boys' basketball games for many years with his cousin and best friend, the late Joseph Lillis Jr.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, of 51 years, Mr. Hyland is survived by two sons, Matthew Hyland and his wife, Dawn, of West Hartford; and John Hyland and his wife, Clare, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Ellen Buckbee and her husband, George Jr., of Clarks Summit, Pa.; and Eileen Juaire and her husband, Philip, of Shrewsbury; a brother, James E. Hyland, of New Milford; 12 grandchildren, Alyssa, Brendan and Cameron Buckbee; Olivia, Noah and Caleb Juaire; Madison, Owen, Luke, Andrew, Grace and Gavin Hyland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Route 109, New Milford. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford.

Friends may call today (Friday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St. in New Milford.
