Jazz camp to offer free concerts

The Litchfield Jazz Festival has announced its free summer concert series "Litchfield Jazz After Work" to be held in New Milford.

The all-star Litchfield Jazz Camp faculty will peform at Maguire Auditorium at the jazz camp's new home at Canterbury School, 101 Aspetuck Ave.

Free concerts will be offered July 7-10, July 14-17, July 21-22, 24, 28-31 and Aug. 4-6 at 7 p.m.

Artists will include the best players of today's jazz scene, including guitarist Dave Stryker, saxophonists Claire Daly, Gary Smulyan and Don Braden, and drummers Charli Persip, Steve Jonhs and Matt Wilson, among others.

The series leads into the Litchfield Jazz Festival's 19th anniversary celebration to be held Aug. 8-10 at the Goshen Fairgrounds.

The festival lineup will feature the Gospel According to Jazz with Kirk Whalum, Grammy nominated vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, U.K. vocalist/pianist Anthony Strong, saxophonist Jimmy Greene, guitar legend Mike Stern, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, bassist Mario Pavone's Accordion Project, the new Litchfield Jazz Festival Orchestra's Django Reinhardt Project, the legendary trombonist and member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Curtis Fuller and more.

Crafts, fine arts, a Kids Zone, food, performances by camp students, artist talks, after parties and jams will also be offered.

Festival tickets start at $40. Children 12 and under will be admitted for free on the lawn.
