The Jewish Community Center in Sherman will offer a public screening of the award-winning film “Raise the Roof” June 5 at 11 a.m.

The film that captures the journey of Rick and Laura Brown of Handshouse Studio as they reconstruct the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the Gwoździec synagogue, an 18th century structure that rivals the greatest wooden architecture in history.

At one time, there were some 200 wooden synagogues across the Polish-Lithuanian countryside.

None survived destruction during the Nazi occupation of Poland.

Tickets are $10 for JCCS members, $15 for non-members, and $5 for students, and may be purchased at or at the door the day of the event.
