Hazardous waste day Saturday in New Milford
NEW MILFORD -- The town's 2009 household hazardous waste collection day will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Patriot's Way, near the railroad station.
The event, which is open to residents of New Milford, Brookfield, Sherman, Warren and Washington, is held rain or shine. Proof of residence will be required.
A licensed transporter will safely dispose of or recycle all household waste dropped off during the collection. All substances must be labeled and in their original containers.
The contractor and the towns reserve the right to reject some materials or impose disposal fees. Businesses and institutions may not bring materials to the event.
Items that can be brought to the parking lot include drain or oven cleaners, old chemistry sets, metal polish, arts and crafts supplies, photo chemicals, floor cleaners, dry-cleaning fluids, wood preservatives, wood strippers, septic system cleaners, paint thinner, lead-based paint and lead paint chips.
Other eligible items include rust preservatives, oil-based paints, transmission fluid, solvents or degreasers, sealants, antifreeze, brake fluid, engine and radiator cleaners.
Pesticides and herbicides in 5-gallon or smaller containers, insect spray and rodent killers, pool chemicals, muriatic acid, no-pest strips and PCB-contaminated items may also be brought to the parking lot.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs, which contain mercury, may also be dropped off.
Computers, printers, TVs, fax machines and monitors will be accepted at no charge. New Milford, Brookfield and Sherman residents may also continue to drop these items off at the town's recycling center on Young's Field Road.
Unwanted cellular phones will be accepted at the thermometer exchange table. The phones will be programmed to access only 911 and distributed at senior centers or donated with calling cards for soldiers.
Residents are reminded not to bring latex paint, used motor oil, Freon, unknown gases, tires, infectious or medical waste, smoke detectors, explosives and highly reactive materials, garbage, ammunition or fireworks, radioactive materials or drugs.
Those attending the hazardous waste event should enter the parking lot from Bridge Street and exit onto Young's Field Road.
