Members of the band and chorus at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village recently won awards at the Festivals of Music competition in Virginia Beach, Va.

Fifty-eight students, including Kent residents, accompanied by music teachers Tom Krupa Jr. and Alicia Simonetti-Sphur and eight parent chaperones, kicked off their trip April 12.

The first day, students had a chance to relax.

The next morning, the concert and jazz bands performed at Tallwood High School.

Later that day, the competition continued at Oak Grove Baptist Church, where the choral and Sweetheart groups competed.

The students performed works by Sousa, Ticheli, Midler and Thomas.

Students attended a dinner-dance cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk that evening.

The next day, the award ceremony took place at Busch Gardens. The Sweethearts took first place in the women's choir division, the jazz band won second place in the jazz ensemble division and the concert band placed second in the concert band division.

The Concert Choir earned sixth place in the concert choir division.

The choir and Sweetheart groups took the overall choir division.

Cassy Worthington of Kent won the only choral soloist award for the whole competition.
