Gunther Kroll, 77, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of New Milford, died March 10, 2012. He was the widower of Mary Ellen (Ryan) Kroll.

Mr. Kroll was born Oct. 22, 1934, in Union City, N.J., to Otto and Charlotte (Zimmerman) Kroll. He graduated from Emerson High School in 1954 and was inducted into the Emerson Hall of Fame in 1999 for his outstanding football achievements.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a corporal on the USS Intrepid.

He was one of 10 Marines chosen to be in attendance at Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly's wedding.

Mr. Kroll was a volunteer fireman in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

After 30 years of service, Mr. Kroll retired from Con Edison.

His joy in life came from loving his family.

Mr. Kroll is survived by two daughters, Peg Baxter, and her husband, Ken, of New Milford, and Susan Kachur, and her husband, Jim, of New Bern; five grandchildren, Kate, Brian, Rebecca, Jessica and Stephen; and a brother, Richard Kroll, of Cedar Grove, N.J. He was predeceased by two brothers, Gerhardt Kroll and Robert Kroll.

Private services will be held at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Burial will follow at the Center Cemetery in New Milford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
