The illustrious history of New Milford High School field hockey is shy one significant chapter: a state championship.

The Green Wave has earned countless wins and league titles courtesy of the guidance of legendary coach Fran Zaloski for more than 30 years and more recently one of her proteges, Dawn Hough, for the past two decades.

Yet the NMHS girls have never managed to secure a CIAC state championship.

The third-seeded 2014 stick crew gave it an excellent run but met its match Tuesday, Nov. 11 in seventh-ranked Darien.

Riding the momentum of its Oct. 31 victory in the South-West Conference title match with Pomperaug, the Green Wave beat tournament opponents 19th-ranked Newtown, 3-0, and 11th-ranked Hamden, 1-0, to move into the state semifinals.

There, coach Hough's charges (15-2-2) absorbed a heartbreaking, 1-0 defeat to Darien's Blue Wave at Ridgefield High School. The goal scored by the Blue Wave was the first permitted by NMHS goalkeeper Madison Corso and her Green Wave defensive mates over a period of six matches, dating back to the regular season.

Darien moves on to Saturday's `L' state championship match in Wethersfield.
