Wave girls turn their attention to the state realm

Green Wave field hockey '09 -- South-West Conference champions...

It's got a nice ring to it, and one that coach Dawn Hough's New Milford High School squad will cherish for many years.

The Green Wave juggernaut, unbeaten since late September and owners of an overall 12-1-3 ledger, raced past arch-rival Pomperaug, 3-1, Nov. 5 at Weston High to claim the SWC's gold title plaque for the school's collection.

Jennifer Lawson scored twice and Erin Shannon contributed a goal in support of a strong defensive effort anchored by goalie Meaghan Robidoux.

The Panther conquest marked the first SWC field hockey title since 2004 for coach Hough's crew and capped an SWC season during which NMHS owned two wins and a tie vs. its longtime nemesis from Southbury.

The Green Wave girls turned their attention this week to the state class 'L' tournament, for which they were seeded fourth among 20 teams.

Coach Hough and Co. were scheduled Wednesday to host Westport Staples (6-8-1-1) in a Round of 16 match at NMHS.

The survivor will play a quarterfinal match today (Friday) in hopes of advancing to the state semifinals next Tuesday or Wednesday.
