An afternoon with an author, former New Milford principal Dr. William A. Burley, will take place Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Woodbury.

Burley, a former principal at Northville Elementary School, and the former East Street and John Pettibone School.

Burley’s first book, “MacKenzie’s Farewell,” published in 2017 and set in Scotland, New York City and Connecticut, introduces the reader to the beauty of Scotland along with discussions of bagpipes.

It includes facts about the environment in a way that encourages more involvement and care for natural resources in an easy-to-understand manner.

The story is a modern-day romance, and includes poetry, music and humor.

The just-published “God, Guns and Charter Schools,” the second book in the trilogy, chronicles the tale of the MacKenzies as they are pitted against religious superstitions, Second Amendment abuses, and encroaching charter schools in their Connecticut town.

Burley earned four degrees at Columbia University.

A longtime Litchfield county resident, he and his wife, Suzanne, reside in Boulder, Colo.., where he enjoys playing the bagpipes and bicycling.

After the talk and question-and-answer session, guests are invited to a reception with the Burleys in fellowship hall of the church, 214 Main St.

Books may be pre-purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and with the publisher, iUniverse.
