Former 'Middle School Principal of the Year' named interim head at New Milford's Schaghticoke

NEW MILFORD — Michael Rafferty was selected as the interim principal for Schaghticoke Middle School during a special Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

Rafferty, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a masters in counselor education, most recently served as principal at Old Saybrook Middle School for 22 years, before retiring in 2013.

Since 2013, Rafferty has served in various interim positions throughout Connecticut, the press release from the Board of Education stated. He received the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1999 and was named CT Middle School Principal of the Year in 2000.

Rafferty officially takes over the position on Wednesday.
