A Christmas Eve fire at a Cornell Road home in the Northville section of New Milford remains under investigation, Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Ohmen said Monday.

Homeowner Mary Sarsfield, and another resident escaped injury after the fire erupted in the living room, damaging the electrical and heating systems as well as the exterior and roof, fire officials said.

Ms. Sarsfield and the resident, whom officials did not identify, were at home when the fire occurred, but escaped the two-story Colonial home with the family pets, Mr. Ohmen said.

The American Red Cross was asked to help because Ms. Sarsfield and the unidentified resident had family and friends with whom they could stay, Mr. Ohmen said.

Although the investigation was hindered by Monday's blizzard, Mr. Ohmen said he expected to go to the house this week and assess the damage and determine the cause of the fire.

Emergency logs state the fire was reported at 8 p.m. and fire crews from Northville, Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 and Washington cleared the area some three hours later.

The fire was reported by the homeowner who spotted fire in the Sarsfield living room wall, the emergency log states.
