To the Editor:

Art Cummings stated in his front-page column last week that voters in a democracy lose in area towns when there is only one candidate for mayor or first selectman.

I beg to differ on two points.

1) The United States is a republic (hint: read the Constitution or recite the Pledge).

2) When voters in area towns agree on one candidate, as we do in New Milford, without a "battle" (Mr. Cummings' word) on the best person for the job, we all win.

We win because the majority believe we have a good leader, we win because we stand united, and we win because we show bipartisan support for the good jobs done by Mayor Pat Murphy and others like her.

Thank you, Mayor, for your continuing efforts on our behalf.
