Elliott Knecht, 88, was a veteran
Elliott O Knecht, 88, of Trumbull, died Dec. 3 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was the husband of MaryJane (Raymond) Knecht. He was a Trumbull resident for 84 years.
Mr. Knecht was born in Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., son of the late Walter and Helen (Osterberg) Knecht. He graduated from Butler Business School and Banking School in Williamstown, Mass.
He was employed with City Trust Bank for 42 years, retiring as assistant treasurer and head of the securities operations for the bank and all of its branches.
A past chief of the Trumbull Center Volunteer Fire Department Co. No. 1, he served the town for more than 64 years. He was a devoted volunteer who set his standards high and by doing so, he developed the respect and admiration from several generations of upcoming firefighters who to this day still call him "chief." He served as fire tax collector for more than 20 years.
Mr. Knecht was a past treasurer of the Washington Masonic Lodge No. 19 in Monroe, where he had been a member for more than 40 years.
He was an active parishioner of the Trumbull Congregational Church for 84 years. He served in many capacities throughout the years, and was on many boards and committees. He served as deacon, trustee and offering steward for more than 20 years. He put in as much time with physical labor to help build and create the church and buildings, including helping to hand dig out much of the basement of the main church, creating the nursery room and kitchen area. He helped with the bell tower and reinstituted the ringing of the bells on Sunday mornings.
He met his wife of 63 years, MaryJane (Raymond) Knecht, at the bank in 1947 and they were married in 1949. He took great pride that he built his own home with the help of his brothers and father.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Knecht is survived by a daughter, Gail,and her husband, Bill Messina, of New Milford; two brothers, Ernest, and his wife, Jeanne Knecht, of Trumbull; and David, and his wife, Ethel Knecht, of Monroe; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Knecht and Jessie Knecht, both of Trumbull; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Knecht, of Stratford, and her daughter, Wendi McManus; seven grandchildren, Heather Keeler, Erica Messina, Jarrett Messina, Joel Knecht, Keith Knecht and Trevor Knecht; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Raymond E. Knecht; a granddaughter, Jodi Messina Mylie; two brothers, George and Lester Knecht; and a sister, Edythe Vitale.
The Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home in Trumbull was in charge of arrangements.
